Building a handcrafted Mongolian yurt might sound like a major construction project, but with good planning, clear instructions, and a team of eager hands, it can be completed in less than a day!
We recently delivered a custom 5-metre traditional yurt to our client Runar Meder at Islandsvegen in Frosta, Norway. Runar caught a clear weather window and brought together family and friends to get the structure fully raised before the pitching day.

🛠️ The Build Process: From Timber Deck to Complete Yurt
The entire assembly took just six hours from start to finish—and that included taking a relaxing break for lunch and coffee!
- Preparing the Base: Runar constructed a solid timber deck to elevate the structure above ground moisture and provide a stable foundation.
- Raising the Lattice Walls & Frame: The steam-bent wooden lattice walls (khana) and roof poles were locked into position and secured to the hand-painted Asian Elm crown (toono) and door frame.
- Insulation & Canvas Layering: The structure was wrapped in heavy-duty insulation layers followed by our 13.75–14 oz poly-canvas cover, tailored to withstand rain, wind, and chilly northern conditions.
- Finishing Touches: Ropes and tensioning straps were tightened to ensure stability and weatherproofing across the roof and walls.
